Update: Jefferson is no longer.
Notes:
- Burger: Jefferson served a high-quality and delicious patty. The sauce from which this burger gets its name, hoisin, did not impart too much flavor, but left a tasty bit of char on the outside. The meaty flavor really carried this burger even though the charred exterior was the only part of our “medium rare” burgers that wasn’t undercooked.
- Bun: Another white-bread, sesame-seed bun that offered little flavor or texture of its own. It held the sandwich together, but could have been better at capturing the juices of the burger. We expected something a little more interesting from this restaurant. Thinking back on it now, we might have been best served by moving this bun off to the side and employing a knife and fork. Yes, yes, blasphemy, we know, but this bun really detracted from the burger.
- Garnish: Jefferson gets high marks for their toppings. They garnish their hoisin burger with little rounds of sliced cucumbers and plum tomatoes and a bed of baby lettuce. The result is crisp, unique, and delicious.
- Mess factor: Slightly messy, but comfortably contained without needing additional napkins. This sandwich could benefit from a bun with more absorbency.
- Fries: “Fluffy clouds of fried potato goodness” – and that’s before we finished off the wine. These were the best French fries we’ve encountered: crispy and crunchy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, with a faint hint of salt. These fries kicked ass.
- Price: $12 – includes the fries and garnish.
- Bordeaux: Jefferson had small list of nice wines, but no Bordeaux for our burgers. We had a 2002 Heller Estates cabernet sauvignon that we found to be a very suitable substitute. This wine was bold enough to stand up to the flavorful burgers and fries; the hint of blackberry and smooth finish made it very drinkable.
- Atmosphere: You could definitely take a girl here. In fact, we recommend this.
- Overall: In the short time since we’ve been coming to Jefferson, it’s changed its name three times: Jefferson, Jefferson Grill, then Jefferson Seafood. However, the experience is pleasantly the same each time: delicious food, great décor, attentive service, and groovy music. This was the first time to try the burger here, and it was as fulfilling as we hoped. The fantastic fries were also a great bonus. It is worth noting that Jefferson has made the Eater Deathwatch not once but twice. What does this mean for you? Well, a table can probably be had at almost any time. So, don’t let the half-full dining room scare you away. Try a hoisin burger here while you can.
